Angela escaped an abusive relationship—one that had subjected her to sexual violence—and later discovered she was pregnant. The grief, confusion, and fear were overwhelming. She knew she couldn’t raise a child with the man who had harmed her. And as a single mother already facing her own set of personal challenges, she didn’t feel capable of parenting alone.
Unsure of what to do, she turned to a Christian pregnancy center, where an advocate prayed with her and told her about TBHC. Amber, TBHC’s Private Infant Adoption Case Manager, explained why she believed adoption was the best choice. Amber walked her through the process of creating a thoughtful adoption plan and a hospital plan. Together, they met weekly in the final stretch of Angela’s pregnancy to make sure every detail reflected her hopes for her child.
Angela chose an open adoption and was able to select and meet the adoptive parents who would raise her daughter. A bond began to form between Angela and the couple—a bond built on love, trust, and mutual respect. Angela was at peace with her decision, knowing her baby would be safe and deeply loved.
After the baby was born, Angela went in for a routine doctor’s visit before returning to work. That’s when doctors discovered a lump on her neck and scheduled surgery. Amber walked beside her through every part of that journey, too—attending her post-op appointments and offering emotional support during an already tender season of grief and recovery.
Soon, Angela received devastating news: she had cancer. She had gone from grieving the loss of parenting her child to grieving the loss of her own health. Would she get to watch her child grow and build a relationship with the adoptive parents? The future felt uncertain and terrifying.
But even in her fear, Angela leaned into her faith. She clung to what she knew was true—that God was with her—and found comfort in the prayers and support of those around her. She joined a support group with Amber and connected with other birthmothers who helped her navigate her emotions. She also found support through a cancer survivor group at her church.
Angela underwent surgery and months of radiation—and she beat it. She’s now cancer-free. In one year, she endured intimate partner violence, rape, an unplanned pregnancy, the grief of placing her child for adoption, and cancer. And through it all, she never gave up. She clung to God, relied on her community, and lived her testimony.
Amber says that in all her years walking with women through adoption, she’s never seen someone display such strength and resilience. Angela’s story is one of grief, redemption, and hope—and it reminds us that even in the darkest seasons, God is still writing the story.
“I will forever be grateful to God. He gave me a second chance at life. I am nothing without Him, so He gets all the glory.”
