Back-to-School Season Highlights the Need for More Foster Families

By July 28, 2025No Comments

When most people think about back-to-school season, they picture shopping for supplies, picking out new shoes, and getting back into routines. But what many don’t realize is that this time of year often brings a sharp increase in the number of children entering the foster care system.

As the school year starts, teachers and counselors are often the first to notice when something isn’t right at home. Signs of neglect or abuse that may have gone unnoticed over the summer suddenly become clearer. That’s when reports are made. That’s when children are removed for their safety. And in the middle of adjusting to a new school year, they’re also adjusting to a new home—if one can be found.

That’s why the need for foster families often grows this time of year. These kids are carrying more than just backpacks and school supplies. They’re carrying questions no child should have to ask, like where they’ll sleep tonight or who’s going to show up for them tomorrow. They need homes that can offer them more than a place to stay. They need stability, encouragement, and the chance to start this school year feeling like they belong.

At TBHC, we believe every child deserves a home where they can feel safe, supported, and steady enough to focus on school and simply being a kid. Children entering care this school year need families now.
