This Christmas, there will be children entering foster care who have never known the joy of waking up Christmas morning to the scent of cinnamon rolls filling the air, the sound of bacon sizzling in a skillet, the sparkle of lights on the Christmas tree, or the warmth of a family’s love, gathered to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ…
…Each fall, we invite the children in our care to make a wish list: three needs, and four wants. Not long ago, a 13-year-old girl – new to foster care – watched in confusion as the other girls eagerly filled out their lists. Her foster mom noticed, and gently asked if something was wrong. The girl hesitated, then quietly whispered, “…What’s a wish list?”
Stunned, the foster mom explained that there were people who cared about her, and wanted to know what she’d truly like for Christmas – so that they could give her gifts she’d love. The other girls jumped in to help, flipping through store catalogues and making suggestions of what to add. Soon, the new girls’ list was complete, though she still doubted anyone would care enough to make her wishes come true.
You can probably imagine her face on Christmas morning—her disbelief turning to joy, as she came down the stairs with the other girls. Receiving those gifts was more than just exciting—it was proof that she mattered…
